This reduces torque on the camera lens mount while using heavy lenses. This wraps around two contact points on the lens to ensure maximum rigidity while still allowing access to both the focus and aperture ring. The mount is held in place by a single fastener screw, but as a safety precaution even in the event that the screw becomes loose or is even removed entire, the mount is designed so that it will not detach from the lens, unless the lens is first detached from the camera.
